Trees, Trees and More Trees!

December just flies by, doesn't it? Every year it seems to go quicker and quicker. So, needless to say, this post is coming much later than I had originally intended, but still, I've managed to get it done before Christmas, so I suppose that counts for something...right? :)

This year, I added 6 different mini trees into the bunch...I've only photographed 5...still need to photograph the other. I tried to do different "themes" with each tree...deer/woodland, angels, kitsch, all colors, red and green, pink and blue, etc.

Christmas Decorating Pt. 1 - Kneehuggers

I love kneehuggers so much! They are definitely one of my favorite parts of decorating for Christmas...they are all so cute and each one seems to have a slightly different personality.I acquired my first kneehugger a few years ago when my Grandmother gave me hers. I used to love him so much when I would see him in her house when I was little, so it was a surprise when she gave him to me. From there, I was hooked...I always look for them when out thrifting.I found 2 more to add to my collection this past summer at a yard sale...and I only paid 25 cents each. Score!I did splurge a little bit, but not too much, about a month or so ago, however, when I stumbled upon this pink girl kneehugger on eBay. I fell in love with her immediately and had never seen one like her before. I bid at the last minute despite telling myself I wouldn't and now, here she is! Isn't she super sweet?Do you collect kneehuggers? If so, do you have a favorite or fun story about stumbling across one? Please share in the comment section! :)

The decorating process is in full effect! I know, some of you may say that before Thanksgiving is too early and I get it, I do, but here's the thing, when you work in retail, Thanksgiving weekend isn't really a feasible time to decorate and if I want to actual enjoy the decorations for more than 2 or 3 weeks, now was the only time I could do it.

With that said, with all of the Christmas decorations I've amassed the past few years, it really is a process. I'm putting up 8 mini trees upstairs and 2 downstairs this year. That takes time. All weekend, in fact. I'm nearing the finishing stages of the upstairs and will begin the downstairs this week, in between working and whatnot. I'll be sharing lots of photos in the coming weeks, but for now, I'll leave you with a sneak peek mobile upload, so forgive the poor-ish quality. Also, I'll be listing more ornaments tonight @ Other Such Nonsense, including diorama and spool ornaments!

I love ornaments! If you couldn't tell...sparkly, vintage, vintage inspired, handmade, traditional, non-traditional, cute, classic, all of the above! It's what I'm inspired most to make, and of course, I always hope my ornaments find a good home.

This weekend, I've listed lots of new ornaments at Other Such Nonsense!

And Winter Wonderland Diorama Ornaments...Merry Mini Wreath Ornaments...And perhaps my favorite, Spun Cotton and Chenille Santas and Snowmen! These are made from vintage 1940s/1950s spun cotton toppers!

Comeback and Some Exciting News!

I know, I've been super MIA around here the past few months. No excuses. With the holidays approaching and being the time of year I always feel super inspired, I'm back and I'm going to try to post more regularly. I plan to.

With that said, I have some exciting news! Other Such Nonsense will be re-opening in time for the holiday season! That means, more ornaments and holiday pretties and some other lovelies in time for Christmas! Over the course of this weekend, I'll begin to list items. There is a small catch though...come the new year, Other Such Nonsense will be going back on hiatus. So, please stayed tuned here and @ Other Such Nonsense for the listings to begin! You can also search for Other Such Nonsense on Facebook and stay up-to-date there! I'm super excited to be back!

Oh, and a little show and tell, because what would a comeback be without something pretty to look at? Here's a mini Christmas village I made last week out of some old Home Interiors wood house Welcome blocks.I painted the houses, glittered the roofs, cut cardstock for the windows and doors and added some silver washi tape for the "glass". Then, I glued some beads to the bottlebrush trees, added a few vintage miniature deer and voila! A mini Christmas village! Super simple and easy and very rewarding once finished. I'm sure if you keep your eyes peeled for any wooden houses, you could make your own.

Vintage Wood Milk Crate Help

Hello all, I know it's been forever and I promise to properly post soon (not that anything has been going on to talk about).

For now though, I'm asking for help from anyone who knows how to properly clean a vintage wood (and metal) milk crate. I picked one up at a sale today and want to be able to properly clean the wood. It's in pretty good shape as is, just old and dusty/dirty. Does anyone have any good tips? I'd love to be able to create a display with it at some point indoors, but I have a bug phobia and don't want to bring it in the house until I can be sure it's clean and that anything creepy and crawly (even if they are teeny and tiny creepy crawlies) are good and dead and not coming in with it. I'm sure it's not too bad as is, but if anyone does have any good tips, I'd love to hear them and would greatly appreciate it.

Show and Tell - A Springtime Wreath!

Hello all!

How is spring treating you so far? We had some yucky, gray, rainy weather today, but other than that, we've had a good amount of lovely days lately here in Maine! In the next few weeks, yard sale and flea market season should kick back up again and I can't wait! I hope this season has some fun finds in store for me...I think I need the inspiration that comes with some unexpected treasures!

I did find some inspiration a few weeks back to make a springtime fabric and ribbon wreath for my door. This is the first thing I've made in a bit and it felt nice. I love the look of it on my door! It makes me happy every time I see it!I used vintage and new fabrics and ribbons, as well as flowers and millinery. Super simple too! It was finished in an evening.

I haven't made anything since, however. Lately, the inspiration just isn't flowing for me and I don't know why I'm so stuck. I want to create. I want to scrapbook, but it just seems like a lot of work to go sit in my little crafty area and do it. Do you ever go through periods like this? Do you try to force the inspiration or do you just sit back and wait for it to find you again?

I'm spending my weekend watching the Harry Potter marathon on ABC Family, and also cleaning, but I know you don't want to hear about that. It's hard to believe the last HP film comes out in a few months! So excited for it, but also a bit sad to see it end, like all good things.

So sorry I've been a bit MIA for the last month. At least it was a short month, though, right?

I'd like to try to make it up to you today though by sharing my current loves, obsessions, whatever you want to call them. Here's what I'm all about right now...

1. Kate Spade!Ahh! I love it all! I've never been one into "designer" anything, but I recently went to T.J. Maxx with the boyfriend to buy him some new jeans and I stumbled upon the most gorgeous bag EVER! Seriously, I fell in love with it, couldn't put it down. Then I read the price tag and went oh my gosh, I can't justify that, but still could not bring myself to put it down. Like, an hour later after lots and lots of debating, I walked out with my splurgy new Kate Spade bag. And the boyfriend walked out with nothing. Isn't that how it goes?

This is the purse - Night Sky Large Tate.I love it so much! And since then, I've fallen in love with nearly everything Kate Spade! Love the style, colors, all of it!

2. GetGlue.This is a new-ish social media check-in site, designed to let you check in to what you are doing or watching right now, but the best part is you can earn stickers and once a month, you can request real live copies of your stickers and they'll send you up to 20 at a time. It's awesome! I really love the Glee stickers I've earned!3. I really want these earrings by Nest Pretty Things. So lovely!

6. I adore Alice in Wonderland and this framed picture from Urban Outfitters.
7. I recently purchased this new brocade pencil cup from the Container Store.I love all the brocade desk accessories. Wish I had a large office or desk area to decorate with all of it! I'm all about white lately, with pops of color of course!8. This ceramic coffee cup from the Paper Source is too cool...would love to bring my coffee with me in this!9. Really love this Felt Pom Pom Coin Purse as well. Also from the Paper Source.10. These Simpsons Blind Box Figures by Kid Robot are SUCH a weakness for me lately. They are so cute and when you open a box, you never know what you're going to get...love little surprises like this!

5 Layouts and Needle Point.

So. I've been doing a bit of scrap booking lately. It's been forever, right? It feels a little foreign, but still fun. After not scrapping for awhile, I always feel like I've forgotten how to do it. Crazy? Maybe, maybe not.

I've completed 5 layouts so far. Tim's nephews and my baby cousin seem to be my inspiration lately. I'm finding I need more of a variety of photos to scrap. I need to make a mental note to start taking more again.I also decided to try out needle point, not realizing at the time that it takes FOREVER and a day! I had picked up a vintage cottage growth chart kit at Goodwill months and months ago and it's just been sitting around. This year, I've decided I want to experiment. Just create for the sake of creating, acquaint myself with news crafts and forms of creativity. I want to work on my sewing skills (or lack thereof), I want to make a quilt, I want to learn to crochet and learn how to properly embroider, among other things. I may pick up papier mache-ing again too.Back to needle-pointing, though...this growth chart is like 4 feet long and is taking me so long to complete. It's a nice fairly mindless activity, but I'm not so sure once I'm finished if I'll want to take it up again very soon. We'll see.

2010 has come and gone...welcome, 2011. I hope you are good to me.

I've started the year off by taking a break, as you may know. Taking a brief break from making things, from tending to my shops. Trying to refresh my batteries and creative juices, so I can come back better than ever. I also want to take the break to catch up on reading, movie-watching, just for fun projects and trying to get back into the habit of eating right and working out regularly.But first, the Christmas decorations needed to come down.After taking everything down and packing it away till next year, it all seemed so empty and sad. But, after a few days, it seems simplified and refreshed. I like it. Also, I got a new quilt! A white ruffled Cynthia Rowley quilt...purchase from Home Goods...I needed a change and this year, I'm liking the simplicity and possibilities with white. What do you think?

Another Tree.

I couldn't help myself. I had all these Harry Potter and Twilight and Lord of the Rings and Spike (from Buffy) ornaments with no place to call home, so I broke down and went out and bought a mini black tree. The quality of this mini tree is not as good as my other mini trees, so that was a bit disappointing, but it still does the trick.I'm calling it my Sci-Fi tree. I've got it set up near my life-size cardboard cutout Edward near my sewing area in our finished basement. I threw the tree up quickly and finished it with some vintage Shiny Brite teardrop ornaments and some other vintage ornaments that didn't make their way onto my other mini trees. I also included some apple ornaments that I thrifted from Goodwill a while back when Twilight first came out, in honor of the Twilight book cover.Speaking of my sewing area and our finished basement, I've decorated that for Christmas as well and this post is technically the Part 3 of the Christmas Decor posts I've been promising.Tim bought us a mini Charlie Brown tree this year as well, so I've put that up on a spare bureau in the basement. If you include this tree, that brings my personal tree total to 6 trees. Do you think I need to seek help for my tree problem?

Also, here's a photo of the handmade Christmas cards I made this year...
Green polka dot fabric stitched onto cardstock with vintage ribbon and lace and a Martha Stewart doily-looking label and a glitter chipboard snowflake or star. A piece of advice, if you're going to make your own cards and don't want to spend extra money on postage, make sure to keep them as flat as can be. The chipboard shapes cost me an extra 20 cents a card to mail!

And finally, here's a fun find. I found this hand painted wooden miniature nativity set at Border's this year. It's made by Paperchase and I love how Joseph looks like some sort of ninja! Awesomeness!

Holiday Decor 2010 Pt. 2 - Mini Trees

As promised, here is part 2 of my holiday decor photos for the 2010 season. This is going to be another picture heavy post, with lost of photos of my trees and ornaments...yes, trees.
This year I have 2 white mini trees, one with a red and green theme and one with a pink and blue theme. The pink and blue tree is my favorite! I adore the ornaments on this tree so much! I also have a super mini silver tree and tiny gold tree.Nearly all the ornaments on these trees are vintage and have mostly been thrifted either this past summer or last.I have one more holiday decor post coming soon, featuring the holiday decor in our finished basement, which is also where my sewing area is. I plan to post that in the next few days.Have you finished your holiday decorating yet? Now that I've finished decorating, I need to get going on sending out my Christmas cards! I handmade them all for the first time this year. I need to remember to take a photo before sending them all out.

2010 Holiday Decor Pt. 1

I believe I've pretty much finished my holiday decorating this year...finally! Some things may be tweaked here and there, but overall, it's done!
This is going to be a picture-heavy post and will primarily feature pictures of clusters and decor on shelves, etc. Finished tree pictures will post in the next day or two.

Caution! Christmas decorating in progress!I've been trying to decorate my room for Christmas since Wednesday evening, on and off...it's been quite the feat! I've got sooo much more stuff this year thanks to some wonderful sales I hit up over the summer.These pictures don't even show the half of it! I've got boxes and boxes piled everywhere! And I want to display everything too because I love it all so much, but I'm running out of room!I've even had to add some new mini trees into the mix this year to hold all my ornaments and even then, I still can't fit them all!
It's fun though, I thoroughly enjoy it. I love Christmas so much! It inspires me all year long!

I promised some ornament features and here is the second one!
I just listed these new Winter Wonderland Diorama Ornaments in the shop this past week! 2 have already sold and only 6 remain for this season. I may make more for next Christmas, but this is it for this year.Each diorama ornament features either a cute little deer or Mr. and Mrs. Santa in a whimsical snowy, wintery scene.Fashioned from old jewelry-type gift boxes and covered in a mix of either paper, paint, fabric or an old book page. Every ornament is truly a unique keepsake!Hang on your tree or hang on a wall or inspiration board, etc. These would even make super cute gifts!I promise to update more soon, despite the busy-ness that is the holiday season. Currently, I'm feeling a bit under the weather with my second cold of the season. I think it's going to be a long winter! Hopefully I'm in tip top shape again soon.

Walking in a Winter Wonderland

Did you all have a happy and safe Halloween? I stayed in and relaxed on what was my last day of vacation. I also decided to watch the new AMC show "The Walking Dead", which premiered last night. Zombies! Fun stuff, rather gory, or rather, graphic, but I liked the show and think I will continue to watch.

Today was back to the day job grind. And this evening, I added some new Winter Wonderland Deer Spool Decorations to Other Such Nonsense!Totally cute and kind of whimsical, each decoration features a plastic deer in a winter scene sitting atop a painted and embellished vintage wooden thread spool. Each one is slightly different. I think these would look adorable on a small shelf, mantle, etc. There are 5 currently available.Still more Christmas yet to come @ Other Such Nonsense this season! :)

Autumn Crafting - Felt Leaf Garlands

About 2 weeks ago, my friend, Katie, and I got together to make some felt Autumn Leaf Garlands. We were inspired by Elsie Flannigan's handmade felt leaf garland seen here.Beforehand, we ordered some high quality wool blend Fancy Felt from Sue Eggen's Etsy shop, Giant Dwarf. We each picked out 6 colors/pieces and split a 12-piece custom pack. This felt is so much nicer and easier to work with than your average craft store felt and I highly recommend it! I think if you try it, you won't want to go back. Sure, it's pricier, but it's way worth it. Plus, it comes in so many nice color shades!

To make the garland, we used Elsie's as a general guideline. We each freehand cut our own leaves and then just simply hand stitched them together with embroidery floss. Super simple! We both finished pretty quickly, the longest part being the stitching.I actually made 2 of them and have yet to hang up the second one. I thought I'd add a fun touch to mine by stitching lace over the brown leaves to give it a more feminine appeal.

So much fun! :)

Vintage Kit Fun

About a month ago at one of the last yard sales I hit of the season, I found a brand new in the box sealed vintage 1978 Li'l Missy Mrs. Santa Doll Kit. It still had the original K-Mart price sticker and for $1, it was super cute and I figured it might be something fun to try, so it came home with me.
Today was one of those gray, dreary days, so I decided to take my chances and try to put this thing together.Normally, I really have a hard time trying to put things together from kits. I read the instructions and sometimes re-read and re-read them again. They can seem so foreign and difficult. It's why I normally don't buy kits of anything...I'd rather figure it out on my own or make my own whatever. It's crazy, sure, but I think it's because I'm so afraid of messing something up that can't be undone, that the whole process seems like more of a chore to me. Please tell me I'm not the only one like this!Overall all, it wasn't so bad. Sure, it took me a few hours during which I had to step away a few times, but in the end, I think she's pretty cute. She's not perfect like the one pictured on the packaging and I messed up her hat a bit, but I was able to fix it for the most part.
I think she'll be a really cute addition to my Christmas decor this year!

Ironically enough, Sadie of Sadie Lou Who also recently found a vintage Li'l Missy doll kit, although in a different style. You can find her blog about it right here. Super cute!

Christmas Time is Here!

I've been a bit MIA for a month...sorry about that! With the arrival of fall and Halloween literally right around the corner, I've been busy, busy, busy making new Christmas goodies for Other Such Nonsense!Christmas inspires me probably about 355 days a year...I love making ornaments and other goodies and my favorite thing to do is to mix the traditional with the unexpected. Pink is probably my favorite Christmas color...I love adding pink to my Christmas goodies! I've got lots and lots and lots of pretties to add to the shop this holiday season, including a new batch of the old favorite Button Wreath Ornaments, some mini wall hangings, and multiple varieties of BRAND NEW ornaments and some fun surprises! So exciting!
Like I said, I've got tons of stuff to add, so I figured, I might as well get started now. So, from this point forward, I'll begin adding new items to the shop. If you haven't already, please heart Other Such Nonsense on Etsy and like the fan page on Facebook. You never know what will pop up unexpectedly and both are a good way to stay up-to-date with new product additions.And of course, if you're interested in any custom ornaments this year, please contact me, as I'd love to create something special for you!

Hello all! I've got sooo much on my to do list today, so I'm going to try to make this a quick post!

I wanted to share what I found at a yard sale on Saturday. Went to hand full, but I only found stuff at one. It was an estate sale of sorts. The lady who owned the house passed away and left all her stuff for the local Baton Troupe to sell and whatever they made, they got to keep as a sort of donation. The lady must have been crafty!

I found this box of vintage velvet ribbon, made in Switzerland. Sooo many pretty colors and a lot of the spools are still full! There were 41 large spools in all and I believe some of it will make its way into Other Such Nonsense 2 soon!I also found a huge double-sided tackle box filled with embroidery floss...pretty much every color under the sun! All of it was wrapped around little plastic cards and each card appears to be full! I've going to have to learn how to embroider!
I also found some lovely ribbon...
And Tim picked up these 2 sealed original Nintendo NES games! I spotted these and I'm such a Nintendo geek! I have 3 original NES systems currently in the house. He paid 75 cents a game!I want to share some peeks at some new Halloween goodies that are ready to make their way into Other Such Nonsense in the next few days.

There's some Spooky Owl Wreath Ornaments (limited edition of 3)...And 2 versions of these Halloween Wall Hangings/Signs...both made with vintage plastic celluloid cake toppers! These are limited as well, as I only had a hand full of these wonderful cake toppers.Like I said, these should arrive in the shop within the next few days, maybe even later today, so if you haven't already, please heart Other Such Nonsense, and be on the lookout! I'm going to have LOTS of Christmas goodies this year, I'm already hard at work on them! More ornaments and some new lovelies!

The Best Yard Sale of All Yard Sales!

I've been saying they've been lackluster. I've been hoping for better. And on Saturday, I found better. Much, MUCH better! I found the yard sale to beat all yard sales!
Vintage Christmas, millinery, gorgeous vintage trims and sequins and beads, so much lovely stuff, that I still can't even believe it! I came home with the trunk of my car filled with boxes of stuff!Finally, a great yard sale! Although now, I don't think another yard sale will be able to beat this one!The people holding the yard sale took my email because the mother-in-law had a house filled with stuff like this that they're trying to clean out. I'm really, really hoping they do email me! My fingers are crossed!
So, needless to say, the rest of my Saturday and Sunday were spent sorting through everything. Not a bad way to spend it though. How was your weekend?

New Lovelies in Shop.

I've added a bunch of new handmade lovelies to the shop today.Still very much inspired by silhouettes and have almost used up the entire sheet of vintage German silhouette scraps that I had in my possession. Also, have been still very much inspired by houses and making mini things. I love little the details and having tiny pieces of art hanging around, added bits of charm everywhere, well...I adore it!You can find everything right here at Other Such Nonsense. I'm on vacation this week (from my day job, that is...still planning on taking care of shop stuff) and I'm super excited about it!

Today, I slept in, woke up and decided to make a trip to the flea market because it was a nice day and why not? I also went through the car wash, which I've been wanting/meaning to do for a while now and then picked up an iced tea at Dunkin' Donuts on my way home. Not a bad way to start the day.

Here's what I found at the flea market on this trip...I had been looking for a cute little wall shelf for some time now and was so excited to find this one! It's a soft pink color and has just enough wear and charm to fit perfectly downstairs in my sewing area! The buttons are from West Germany (except the Le Chic buttons!) and are very lovely in person. I couldn't pass up the Mary Poppins and Snow White tin plates for $1 a piece. I always loved Mary Poppins as a child!

I went to the flea market last Sunday as well, however, I didn't find too much on that trip, but I did find a lady who was offering lots of old vintage greeting cards...some were so lovely, with sweet touches of glitter and "faux" hair. These were some of the cards I picked up...Notice the faux hair on this one, as I previously mentioned? So funny!This sealed pack of Dennison Christmas seals was $2. I don't know if I dare open it...hmm...And this was everything I brought home all together. The cross-stitched picture was $1 and the gorgeous doily was $2.I'm still finding the yard sales around here this year to be sub-par. I went to 2 yesterday, the only 2 that sounded remotely interesting and I found a vintage figurine at one that was cute, but they were asking $5 for it, which I thought was extremely pricey for a yard sale. At the next one I found 2 miniatures Japan figurines and they wanted $1 each (I wouldn't have paid more than $1 for both), so I came home empty-handed. There's not too many more weekends here until it's autumn and chilly, so I hope these weekends to come will be full of great sales, but I'm not optimistic.

I know it! It's crazy right? Over the past few months, I've been able to squeak out a layout or two here and there. I haven't really felt like I'm on a roll or anything, but it's a start.

Angels and Gnomes.

I went out thrifting this past weekend for the first time in a few weeks. There weren't very many yard sales and the ones that were going on weren't very good. I find this has been happening a lot this summer. Aside from the 1 great sale I hit at the beginning of summer where I found all that lovely Christmas stuff and more, I haven't really been to any since. I've found a few things here and there, but last year (which was my first full thrift season) seemed like I found great stuff every weekend. I don't know what's going on. A thrifty dry spell, perhaps?

Of the sales I went to on Saturday, only one proved promising. It was an estate sale of sorts, cleaning out an elderly lady's house, although most of the stuff was already gone, as I understood she had given a lot away previously. I did find some things. A plastic wicker-looking sewing box, lots of old ledger and lined paper (not pictured), a 1969 Singer Sewing Book, which I believe will come in handy, some milk glass vases, rolls of vintage baby and wedding gift wrap, small wood crates, etc.This vintage ceramic mouse figurine was 25 cents.
And these vintage gnome figurines were 25 cents a piece as well. I think they're super cute and couldn't pass them up, despite 2 of them being broken (1 has a chipped cheek, 1 has a broken glued foot).On Sunday, I took Tim's Mom to the flea market and antique store with me. The antique store is where the flea market is located. I found a handful of things.This vintage enamel flower pin was one of my favorite finds and the picture doesn't really do it justice! I talked the vendor down to $2.I'm all about vintage Christmas lately and have my eyes peeled for anything kitschy and cute of the sort. I was happy to find this little ceramic angel figurine and the pair of plastic Rudolphs.I was also very happy to find this lovely angel tree topper decoration...she's about 12" tall and so pretty and kitschy!On a side note, the lady at the antique store told me I must have a specific project in mind for all of the items I purchased because it was "such an eclectic mix of stuff" and I said, no, that's just my style. I found that humorous, especially since, to me, everything looked like it went together so well. Style and personal taste is a funny thing!

Speaking of Christmas earlier, there's only a handful of days left to get your hands on any of the CHRISTMAS IN JULY items at OSN 2. They're going back into the vault (metaphorically speaking, of course) until the Christmas season. You can find everything right here.

Red Like a Lobster.

We had a yard sale yesterday...on a day that was supposed to be somewhat cloudy that turned out to be super sunny. 6-2pm in the sun, baking. Even SPF50 didn't save me. I now have bright red forearms and a starting to blister forehead and one lone red spot on my chest, right under my neck. Joy.

But, I did get rid of some stuff...the boxes hanging around, in the way, I won't miss. Oh no! Not at all...and it was nice to make some pocket change...not a ton, but some. The best part is I'll probably use it to go thrifting next weekend to find new stuff...crazy, isn't it?

Anyways, so this past week, I've spent some time painting a few things...spray painting this little wood house shelf that I found at a yard sale last summer...and painted this thrifted wood plaque with this image of Charlie Brown as a ghost from "It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown". I found this image on FlickR and that's what I painted it from.It's now hanging above my bed, despite not being close to Halloween. I don't care. I think it will stay there all year long. I'm proud of it! I don't normally just paint...in fact, here's a secret. I hate painting, so this is a real feat for me. Major progress!I've been working on some more things lately, none of which are ready to be revealed just yet, but as evidence, here is a current picture of my craft closet...Messy, messy!

Christmas in July

It's July 1st already...where did the month of June go? Time flies when you're having fun! And fun I've had over the past couple weeks...I turned 25 (yikes), I sewed my first zippered pouch...Went thrifting, made a trip to the antique mall and flea market...And I saw "Eclipse" last night and loved it! R. Pattz makes me swoon!

Now, with July here, I thought it would be fun to have Christmas in July at Other Such Nonsense 2: Vintage & Supply! I've got lots of fun Christmas stuff that I've been saving and I thought I might as well share some of it now, instead of waiting a few more months.

Items will be listed throughout the next week and will be available till August 1st, when they will go away and wait till the Christmas season is upon us.

Under the weather and having a birthday.

No thrifting for me this weekend. Instead, I'm nursing a head cold. Blah. I started coming down with it on Wednesday. Stupid cold. Go away! I think I'm going to look into taking vitamins. I never have, but over the past 2 years, I've gotten sick way too many times for my liking and I'm hoping vitamins will help.I did go out last Saturday, though. At least for a little bit before it started raining. Found some things, including this super cute little owl ceramic coffee set, plus 2 afghans and some other fun stuff. Everything I found seems to go together too.Tomorrow is my birthday. 25 years old. Yikes. I still sometimes feel eternally 12. I'm okay with that. Hopefully the cold is long gone or mostly gone...I'll take mostly gone. And if it is and the forecast-ed thunderstorms stay away, maybe a trip to the flea market will be in order. We shall see.

Up to My Head.

In boxes. In vintage glasswear. In Pyrex. In knick knacks and childhood toys. In miscellaneous things I can't part with.I decided at the end of last week that I absolutely needed to re-do my storage in the basement. Some of the old plastic storage totes I had no longer closed properly and were warped. I had tons of cardboard boxes filled with stuff my Grandmother had given me when she moved just after Christmas and lots of stuff thrifted at the end of last year and so far this year that needed to be put in boxes and stored properly.So, I picked up some more plastic storage totes (that have closeable handles) from Target and 2 massive boxes of bubble wrap to re-wrap anything breakable, as I had been previously using newspaper and had found that the print was rubbing off on some of my glasswear.I started taking things out of boxes and unwrapped them as I went and soon I had piles of stuff everywhere. It was overwhelming. I spent nearly all my free time this week on this, and it's still not quite done, but it's close and I feel better now that it's organized and everything is stored properly. I was also able to purge some things, so that felt nice.I'm sure I'll have to tweak it again at the end of this thrift season, but oh well. I'll deal with that then.The good news is that someday when I have my own house and don't live at home, I'll have plenty of stuff to fill my home!Now, "GLEE" fans...what did you think about this past week's season finale? So good! I want Jonathan Groff to come back next year, though! I'm going to keep my fingers crossed all summer, if I have to!

That's all for now. I have to go and figure out my yard sale plan for tomorrow. Will I find anything good to add to my collections? Who knows!

Running On Dunkin'.

I love Dunkin' Donuts, as inconsistent as they may be. It's no secret. That I love it and that it's inconsistent. On occasion, my coffee will taste horrid, but when it's good, it's sooooo good! And I swear they put something in the coffee and the egg and cheese croissant sandwiches to make you become addicted. Because I am.
So, last Saturday when I went out to some sales with Tim and his Mom, I was thrilled to find these almost like new vintage ceramic Dunkin' Donuts mugs by Rego. Soo cute! I love them so much and can't wait till I have my own kitchen one day to display them in.

At the same sale, I almost picked up a big bedding bag filled with vintage lace and trim. I didn't photograph that, as I was still sorting through it.
Here's everything I got in my haul from last Saturday. The kneehugger elf was 10 cents, the jade colored vase was 10 cents, the hand chopper by federal glass is almost like new and was 50 cents and that was all from 1 sale. The Merry Christmas decoration was 50 cents and the deer was a quarter from another sale.

Unfortunately, I have to work tomorrow morning, so no sales for me this week, which is okay, because none really sound that great. Next weekend, though, hopefully!

I updated Other Such Nonsense with some new handmade goodies tonight!There's the new mini banners made from vintage photo slides, as I sneaked yesterday.Here's a Dream Mini Vintage Photo Slide Banner hanging on a shelf in my room.More of these will be on their way too, including a Baby Girl banner to match the Baby Boy banner!Speaking of babies, I also added 3 sets of Baby Gift Tags, made from upcycled tile samples! Perfect for adding to baby shower gifts, scrapbook pages or baby books, or for hanging on an inspiration/memory wire in a nursery!And last but not least, I added 2 new keepsake/trinket/jewelry boxes, covered in fun vintage fabrics! I think I finished sorting and cleaning everything...I think being the operative part. I went back to the sale of the 2 little French ladies this morning and filled another whole bag and box of stuff. So many cute things!
I tried taking pictures of everything...but neglected to take any pictures of any of the craft stuff I picked up this weekend, plus some other stuff. Oh well. Here's everything. Please see my FlickR for generally more information on specific photos.

Now, I need to find places for everything. I love finding hauls like this, but the aftermath always stresses me out for a bit. I'm feeling overwhelmed, for sure.

Sorting Through the Haul.

I hit a few yard sales today...3 of them were good, 1 of which was awesome! At a house that had been occupied by 2 little French ladies (which usually means lots of lots of cute kitschy stuff!), I hit the motherload and came out of there with 1 box, 1 large bag plus some loose stuff. I had to dig through boxes and under piles, but I found tons of vintage Christmas stuff, some craft stuff, etc. It got to the point I couldn't dig anymore because my hands were so full, and they're having it again tomorrow, so I'll probably swing by one more time.

But now, I find myself having to clean and sort through everything. This is what the dining room table looks like currently...And here are some close-ups of the piles of stuff...including some of the vintage Japan paper houses that were all thrown in the box I picked up...love!Wish me luck! And sorry I missed last week's post. Will have to catch up soon!

5 Things Friday.

Happy Friday, all! Do you still have my Care Bear? Here's a few quick things...1. I heart Jonathan Groff on "Glee". I want more of Jesse St. James. And I don't want him to end up having any evil-ish ulterior motives. That would be no good. No good at all! Hearted him so much in this week's episode, and how I loved that Rachel included all 3 of her "men" in her bad reputation project! "Glee" redeemed itself this week for me. Hopefully it continues this way.
2. I went thrifting a bit last weekend. I went to 2 sales that were a total bust, the flea market, where I found literally a handful of vintage buttons and 1 church sale, where I picked up a vintage floral fitted sheet for 25 cents that I'll use as fabric and a vintage pom pom maker for 50 cents, as well as a box of Shiny Brite ornaments and some vintage plastic Christmas nativity miniatures (not pictured) that I'll use in Christmas ornaments, etc.3. This weekend doesn't look very promising on the thrifty front. There is 1 sale that sounds good on Sunday morning though.

4. I've been working on some new lovelies for Other Such Nonsense. Remember to check out the new SALE section there...trying to make room for the new stuff! Also, I added lots of things to the SALE section of Other Such Nonsense 2: Vintage & Supply as well! Making room for new things there as well! You could call it a spring shop cleaning of sorts.

5 Things Friday.

1. I did a bit of Etsy shopping the other day. I purchased this vintage "Busy Timmy" Little Golden book and this vintage pink Putz house from TinselAndTrinkets and this gorgeous vintage fabric from Red Comb Vintage. I bought the book because my boyfriend's name is Tim and thought it would be fun to collect vintage children's books with him name in them for display. Call me weird.2. Dear "Glee" writers and showrunners. You have/had a wonderful little gem of a show. You don't need to resort to all sorts of "famous" guest stars and gimmicks. We go from Kristin Chenowith, whom I loved on "Pushing Daisies", but whom I don't care for at all on "Glee" - the 2 April Rhodes episodes have been easily my least favorite thus far, to Molly Shannon and Olivia Newton John and then Neil Patrick Harris and Jennifer Lopez. It's too much!

3. These plastic babies I thrifted from an estate sale last summer always make me happy. Such kitsch. I love, love the little one looking sideways. If I were a more talented sewer, I'd make them little clothes.4. I added a bunch of stuff to the new SALE section @ Other Such Nonsense! Go check it out! 5. I don't know if I mentioned it before, but I had been looking for a cute, relatively inexpensive earring holder a while back. I finally settled on this one from Urban Outfitters. Here's what it looks like all set up...That's all for today. Now I have to go get ready for my day job, or rather night job tonight, as I'm working till 10pm. Coffee is needed!

Thrifty Saturday.

I went out thrifting this morning. It's still kind of early in the season here. Lots and lots of moving sales though. I went to 1 church sale, 1 yard sale, 1 moving sale, 2 "estate sales", that were really just yard sales (big disappointment!) and stopped by my favorite outdoor flea market, which was really hoppin' today. Could hardly find a place to park!I did find some things today though. Not a lot and I'm really being picky about what I buy.I picked up a pretty floral pillow case for $1.00 that looks brand new to put on my Memory Foam pillow, that I've been sleeping on with no pillow case since I bought it.
I picked up the St. Labre Indian School plastic Indian doll, the spring green covered Pyrex dish and cute small hobnail vase at the first yard sale I went to. I spent $2.50 for all 3 things.The thread, spools, trim and buttons/notions were all from the flea market. Some of the buttons will be listed in Other Such Nonsense 2: Vintage & Supply either later today or tomorrow.

Sewing Area.

I'm not sure if you remember, but back in the fall, I mentioned setting up a small sewing area in our finished basement. It doesn't get any natural light and there is no overhead lighting. Just lamps throughout this huge boxy room. With my old camera, I could never get a proper picture, so I haven't shared the space, until now, that is...I took the plunge and broke my sewing machine out of the box, nearly 2 years after I received it as a Christmas present from my Mom. The sewing machine intimidated me. Sewing intimidated me. I had sewed a bit back in middle school home ec. class, but I didn't really remember any of it and hadn't tried it since. I figured if I didn't take the machine out of the box, I would never, ever try to learn how to sew. Of course, with it being out and with having a somewhat cute space to sew in, I have somewhat learned how to use my machine and have sewed on some things here and there. Nothing big yet, but the machine is being utilized and I'm still learning.Originally, I had a card table set up, but that didn't work out so well, as the whole table would shake when I would try to sew. Then, my grandmother moved in December and she gave me this sewing table that had a new top put on it years back. She had used it as a microwave stand, but didn't want it anymore. It works perfectly!The space is still a work in progress. I'd like to get some sort of shelving unit or bookcase or visible storage for all of my fabric (mostly thrifted) that now sits in purple plastic storage bins to the left of the small shelving unit next to the table that hold my sewing box, a lamp, my small collection of miniature and toy sewing machines, books, yarn, crochet thread, etc. If anyone has any ideas, please share!Most everything in this space was thrifted or given to me. The table, as I mentioned, the shelving unit, the bulletin board were all given to me, the small wood rocker was thrifted from Goodwill. I'd like to get or make a cute pillow or plushie to sit on it. The lamps and plastic folding chair were purchased at Target. The rack with the ribbons, the ribbons themselves, thread, sewing box, knick knacks, yarn and crochet thread were all thrifted. The owls were the find from the antique shop that I blogged about yesterday (they found a home!).
And yes, Edward is now down here. I had to move him from the bedroom, as he kept creeping guests out. He fits down here better anyway and has company in the form of Spike from Buffy/Angel (on the other side of the room, not pictured)...I apparently have a thing for cardboard cutout vampires. Strange, I know!And because I was taking pictures down in the basement, I figured I'd also take a picture of our wood stove area. The garland was handmade from recycled toilet paper rolls. The pictures are actually framed vintage sheet music covers and the giant Dala Horse and Rooster (love these!) are on loan from my Grandmother and belonged to my Great-Grandmother.

First Thrift of the Season.

Last weekend, there were a hand full of moving sales and by hand full I mean 2. Still, I managed to find a few things at each one.
I particularly love the box of Shiny Brite ornaments! The box is in really good condition.

The vintage owl hooks weren't exactly thrifted, but were found at a local antiques shop, where I fell in love with them and just HAD to have them. Haven't found a place for them yet, but I'm trying. Same goes for this cute little spring purse/tote that was handmade from vintage fabrics and was found at the same antique store at this cute little booth in the back, filled with vintage linens, bedding, notions, sewing patterns and cute purses and make-up pouches, aprons handmade from vintage fabrics, etc. I adore this purse so much, I'm tempted to never use it (crazy I know!)...but I do know it looks fabulous hanging off the door knob in my bedroom. I almost bought this super cute make-up pouch featuring vintage Lily Pulitzer fabric, but didn't. If I go back and it's still there, I may have to get it though.This weekend it's cloudy and rainy, so no thrifting for me. Next week, perhaps?

New mini wall hangings and vintage button magnet trios were added to the shop tonight!I had so much fun making all of these! As you can see, I'm extremely into pink and yellow right now...and flowers. I think I'm really being influenced by the arrival of spring!

5 Things Friday.

1. I started scrapbooking a new layout. Then I ran out of scrapbooking tape part of the way through. Major bummer! That's always been my adhesive of choice...Scotch Scrapbooking Tape. Can't scrapbook without it. I bought some more tape and was able to finish the layout. Then, I started on some mini photo album that will be gifts for some special little people, that I have been wanted to complete for a while now. Then I ran out of tape again, so I have only completed the one layout. But it did feel good to scrapbook! Especially to get out some feelings about a family situation that had been on my mind.

2. I'm obsessed with the Cuban Chicken Panini @ Panera Bread. Although, hold the ham and the sun-dried tomato ale mustard. I love, love these things! I had one for dinner last night and for lunch today. It probably doesn't help that my local Panera Bread is almost directly across the street from work.

3. I'm SO upset that Boston Rob got voted off of "Survivor: Heroes vs. Villians" last night. I haven't watched "Survivor" since the All-stars season and now have no desire whatsoever to watch the rest of this season now that the most entertaining this about it is gone. Love Boston Rob!

4. I'm so itching for thrift season to kick up again! I miss the yard and estate sales and my favorite outdoor antiques flea market!!! And most of all, I miss the thrill of the hunt and the excitement of a good find!

5. It's Easter this weekend. We're grilling. What are you doing?

Little Cousin.

As of yesterday evening, I have a new little cousin. This is Bridget! She'll probably be the subject of a scrapbook page soon! Hopefully I can get my printer working properly and not printing my photos with weird color bars in the middle of them. I think I need a photo printer. Does anyone have any photo printers they recommend? Preferably cost efficient. :)

I did scrap a page the other night. No sunlight to photograph it yet, except today, but obviously, I was at the hospital and not at home. I want to scrapbook more. I've been missing it.

My Favorite Vintage Buttons

I gathered some of my most favorite vintage buttons and thought I'd share them today!I love all of the bright color and the intricate details.I love using them in my projects, but sometimes I think they're just too pretty or interesting to use. Of course, these all belong to that category.
Rhinestone buttons are a love of mine as well. Love the touch of sparkle in the center of the plastic.At some point, I should probably figure out some way to display my favorites...maybe some sort of shadowbox. Anyone have any ideas?

I'm getting very excited that flea market/thrift season should be starting back up soon here! Of all the things I keep my eyes open for, buttons (and trim) are always number 1. It really is an addiction!

A Re-Organized Craft Space and DESTASH Sale.

A few weeks ago, I went to go sit down at my craft space, but then realized, I couldn't even get to my craft space, as it was overrun with "stuff". So much stuff, piled and thrown, here and there. I'm sure my fellow crafters can relate. Of course, if you remember, my craft space is a literal closet, which, really, doesn't provide that much room, so I really need to keep it under control at all times, or it gets really out of control. I hadn't done a massive clean-up since sometime last year, and even then, it wasn't as massive as it needed to be, as I held on to lots of stuff that I had been holding onto and never used, you know, just in case. Once again, I'm sure my fellow crafters can relate.So, I started in, one bin, one jar, one box, one item at a time and I purged and I purged and it felt so good, while also feeling really overwhelming. I had stuff pulled out from the closet everywhere, all over my bedroom. After seeing the pile of stuff I was purging, I couldn't believe it had all been in my closet, as my closet was still full!I gave a huge box and some bags of stuff to a few of my friends, one of whom was going to bring a ton of it into her work, as she works at a establishment that helps individuals with development problems. They love arts and crafts, but their supplies are limited, so she knew that they would love everything I gave her.

After giving a ton away, I still found a bunch of stuff that I don't plan on using. And really, if I don't plan on using it or if it doesn't fit my current "style", why hang on to it in case and let it clutter my creative space, which in turn clutters my creativity? I'm sure others can find uses for it, so, with what's left, I'm having a huge DESTASH sale @ Other Such Nonsense 2: Vintage & Supply! I'll be adding lots of items throughout the next week. I hope to have everything listed as fast as I can list it, as I really want to just get rid of it all.

Poor Corey Haim.

It saddened me today to read about the loss of Corey Haim. (Photo copyright of Warner Bros.)

Way before my obsession with all things "Twilight", there was "The Lost Boys". I was a little bit behind it's time...I was born in 1985, making me a wee 2 years old when it came out, obviously too young for vampire movies at the time, but I did discover it on my own at some point in the late 90's. And I loved it! Corey Haim's portrayal of "Sam" was so endearing. At the time it became new to me, I believe I was in middle school and developed a total crush on him. I picked up a copy of "The Lost Boys" on VHS and watched it SOOO many times...my favorite parts were all "Sam" parts...the bathtub, the stairs when he confronts Michael, with the Frog Brothers. After that, I tracked down "Lucas" and was endeared yet again and then there was "License to Drive", in which he was cute, and at that point, I think I researched a little to find out what he was up to and it was then that I found out about his drug problem. It saddened me then, when I was all of maybe 14, finding out what his life had become. I didn't crush on him so much after that, although I still loved "The Lost Boys", etc. I felt sorry for him and so hoped that one day he'd find peace and happiness, because then, and even later, while catching a few episodes of "The Two Coreys" on A&E in 2007, it seemed to me that he had just lost his way so badly, that he couldn't find a way to climb out of that black hole, no matter how hard he tried to climb.

I guess as the media is saying, he truly was that "lost boy", seeming to never be able to reclaim that time in his youth, that he so badly seemed to want back. It's a sad story with a sad end and I can only hope he's now found what he couldn't here on Earth.

I've always been one to have an interested in Hollywood and pop culture...the movies and television shows entertain me and the stories and people fascinate me. Lately, it just saddens me to keep hearing that another person I had adoration for, no matter how small that may have been, while I was growing up has passed away. Heath Ledger, Brad Renfro, Brittany Murphy, Andrew Koenig (aka "Boner" on "Growing Pains"), and now Corey Haim. So sad. I hope to not read another name for a long while...

I've spent the past 2 days doing shop stuff...taking photos, editing photos, listing items, etc. I plan to spend the next 2 days doing the same as of right now. I've managed to catch Tim's cold and woke up feeling awful yesterday, so if I can't do anything else, might as well sit and catch up on Etsy stuff. I also managed to squeeze in some reading. I'm currently on Kyra Davis' "Obsession, Deceit and Really Dark Chocolate". It's a fun, easy read. And I've also been able to watch more of the "Six Feet Under" box set I got a few weeks ago.

I reorganized my craft space. And purged quite a bit that I haven't and don't plan on using any time soon. I'll be having a destash sale @ Other Such Nonsense 2: Vintage & Supply over the next week or so. I hope to have the items listed as soon as possible. Will update here soon...complete with pictures of my reorganized craft space!

Power Outage: The Sequel

Well...regularly scheduled blog-posting has been interrupted today by the fun little rain and wind (up to 90MPH, at one point) storm that passed through last night and knocked our power out at 11pm and has kept it out ever since. FYI, it's now 7pm the next day and we still have no power.

I'm reminded of the last time this happened and our power was out for nearly 4 days. Unfortunately, this time, the storm has also left us with water in our basement...the finished, carpeted portion of our basement.

Here's to hoping the power comes back on soon! Will keep you posted.

That means another blog post! Confession...I almost forgot. I know. I know. But, I still have 1 hour left till midnight on east coast time, so this counts. Did I mention I'm going to try to post every Friday? Well, I am.Last Friday I mentioned that I was heading into Boston to see the Harry Potter Exhibition at the Museum of Science. I figured I'd talk a bit about it for all of you Potter-lovers out there!

The exhibition was really wonderful to see. I had the opportunity to check out the Lord of the Rings exhibition when it rolled by back in 2004 (I believe) and while that was neat to see, it in no way can compare to the Harry Potter Exhibition. The HP Exhibition was so much more vast and detailed...truly incredible! It took us about an hour and 15 minutes to go through the entire exhibit (including the huge store at the end) and that was rushing it...we had a train to catch after all.I thoroughly enjoyed the detail that went into everything...the props, costumes...things the average eye would never pick up on. So many costumes...gorgeous fabrics and laces! I particularly enjoyed seeing the costumes of Dolores Umbridge. So fantastically pink! I'm now going through the pink phase that I never did through grade school. And then of course, I loved seeing the costumes worn by some of Potter crushes, i.e. Christian Coulson as Tom Riddle, Sean Biggerstaff as Oliver Wood...And of course, there were 3 costumes of Robert Pattinson's as Cedric Diggory! Exciting!
Speaking of Cedric Diggory, going through the major store, I had my eye out for anything R. Pattz. I didn't really find much...that was relatively affordable that is. There were replica wands for $44.99 and a replica Marauder's Map, also for $44.99...yes, $44.99! A note to anyone who visits the exhibition in their own town, most things are a bit overpriced, like the aforementioned, which retail online for about $10 less. I especially took note of the price of the chess set, which was priced at $499.99. Online, it retails for $399.99, so be weary of that. For myself, I did pick up a bag of coloring pages and a glittery flocked coloring kits. What can I say? It's the crafty, eternal-12 year old inside of me! I also picked up some postcards and we made sure to get an Exhibition program/book. Then, lo and behold, what was nearly hidden near one of the registers? A Harry Potter Exhibition magnet with a picture of Robert Pattinson as Cedric Diggory! Score! I was happy!

Here it is pictured with a little souvenir Boston globe I picked up at a shop in Fanueil Hall.For anyone who is interested in visiting the Exhibition, be sure to keep an eye on the official site, as I believe there will be more cities added. Definitely visit if you get a chance! And tip of advice, bring your patience with you...it was insanely packed when we went and while it was still worth it to see, it was often hard to see with all of the people clamoring around.

Bad Blogger! Bad!

I know, I know...I've been a bit MIA as of late. Back in December, I was pre-occupied with getting ready for my first craft show (which, by the way, went well for me, even though the actual attendance at the show was pretty dismal, unfortunately), and then as soon as that was over, it was Christmas and New Year's and here we are in February. I promise to be a better blogger from now on. Really! I'm going to try my very best to post a blog every Friday from here on out.

For now, I'll give you a brief run-down of what's been going on in my life. In list format because lists are fun, right?

- Christmas happened. I got a new camera! Yay!- I tried out my new camera by taking lots of new pictures.

- I also re-vamped my Other Such Nonsense shop photos.- I started watching this cute little man 3 days a week.- I became head over heels in love with the insanely amazing TV series, "Dexter".

- I watched the first season of "True Blood" after seeing it at Target for the low price of $16.99.

- I also got caught up on "Supernatural" seasons 3 & 4 thanks to Tim picking them up for me for Christmas.

-I saw "Avatar" in IMAX 3D and while being impressed by the visuals (of course), thought the movie was okay. Really just saw it as a metaphor for how we, as humans, have nearly destroyed our own planet.

- I developed a mini-crush on Joseph Gordon-Levitt after seeing "500 Days (of Summer)" and then "The Lookout".- I stopped to remember Heath Ledger on January 22nd, the 2 year anniversary of his passing. Still so heartbreaking to me.- I splurged on some new supplies from Papier Valise. Although, I've yet to use them.

- I have been desperately trying to find my creative spirit again. While feeling very much like I want to create and feeling very inspired at times, the hand full of times I've sat down to, I haven't had much luck.

- I did create one layout. This one, which is the first layout I've ever machine-stitched on...
- I had someone hit and break my driver's side mirror while stopped in traffic heading to work on Christmas Eve. Merry Christmas to me!

- I discover dried pineapple...yum!

And that's about it. Not a very exciting past 2 months. Lots of movie and tv-watching and not creating. It's been a nice break though. After the holidays, I think everyone always needs a little re-charge.

Tomorrow, I'm heading into the big city...Boston-bound to see the Harry Potter exhibit at the Museum of Science. Should be neat! Lots of costumes and props from the films...love seeing that stuff! I need to start saving money (yeah, right) for a trip to Universal Studios Orlando to visit the Wizarding World of Harry Potter. I've often said, if I could live in any fictional world, I'd pick the world of Harry Potter, hands down! I'm such a geek, I know.

2009 Mini Tree

Despite being super busy trying to prepare for my first craft show coming up this Saturday, I managed to squeeze in a little holiday decorating!I was so excited to decorate my mini tree this year, as I've thrifted some fantastic ornaments this past summer. I opted to use mostly all vintage ornaments, with a handful of new favorites and lots of pixie elves. I love pixie elves! My Grandmother had a pixie elf that she uses to sit atop a reindeer every year in her kitchen and a few years ago, she gave the elf to me. I just adore him! I want to start a collection (I know, ANOTHER collection) and am well on my way!Like last year, I stuck some vintage corsages into the top of the tree to kind of build my own topper, and unlike last year, I stuck a vintage angel on the very top that was found in a box of my Great-Grandmother's things. She doesn't seem to work. But, I still find her very lovely.
We received our first significant snowfall here the other day...blah! Winter is here! It makes me itch for yard sale/flea market/thrift season! I can't wait! I haven't been thrifting since September and I miss it. I did make a trip to Goodwill at the end of October (I hadn't been since June before that) and I found a few things, which I had forgotten to show before...I haven't been back to Goodwill since, however. I'd like to, but I try not to when I don't have the extra money. My favorite local Goowill has really increased their prices too. Some things I found the last time I might have picked up, but they were so pricey and I refuse to pay high prices at Goodwill.

In other news, all 2009 Button Wreath Ornaments have been listed in the shop. If you've had your eye on one, I recommend getting it quickly, as they've been selling fast and come this weekend, I'll be taking them to the craft show with me. Special Edition.

Happy November, everyone!

Seriously though, how is it November? The Christmas decorations are already up in the major box stores and Christmas music is playing. I remember being a child and feeling like it was FOR-EV-ER between the start of fall and Christmas and now it sneaks up like nothing!

I've been doing a lot of organizing lately. I finally took the sewing machine I received for Christmas 2 years ago out of the box. It took me 2 hours to figure out how to thread it. Luckily, I still have some knowledge of how to use it from the home ec. class I took in middle school. I even set up a super cute little sewing area downstairs, which is still in progress. I'll have to take a picture soon!

I've also been busy making some more ornaments and working on some special Twilight Saga-related items for the shop in celebration of "New Moon" arriving in theaters later this month. Included is 3 new limited edition mini shadowbox-art pieces, as well as some new Button Wreath Ornaments Twilight-style!Look for these to show up in Other Such Nonsense later today/tomorrow!

Massive Etsy Update!

I woke up this morning. Made a necessary trip to Dunkin' Donuts for coffee and have spent the rest of the morning uploading some new items to Other Such Nonsense. Greeting cards, Christmas ornaments, etc. Here are some of the new goods...I intend to spend the afternoon working on finishing up a new batch of ornaments. Maybe some picture taking since I have some natural light today.

On another note, I'm very disappointed that I missed "It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown" on tv last night. I know I have the dvd, but somehow, it's just not the same as watching it on tv. Does anyone else feel the same way? Maybe it's just me and one of my quirks. I guess I'll have to pop in my dvd though, if I want to watch it this year.

Speaking of Halloween, does anyone have any exciting plans? Share in the comments, please! I'd love to hear, as I have absolutely nothing exciting planned, except maybe some Great Pumpkin-watching. :)

Catching up.

Or trying to. I've resigned to the fact that 2009 is just going to be a hectic year with lots of unexpected obstacles popping up. At least, obstacles having to do with getting anything done, i.e. crafting, scrapbooking or shop stuff.

The latest unexpected happening...my almost 96 year old Great-Grandmother (we call her G.G.) is in the hospital and has been for over a week now. She's doing as well as she can for the situation she's in, which I won't get into, but we all know her time to go will be sooner than later. She's been lucky though. She really hasn't had any health issues too serious and even a year ago, was still her usual goofy little self. She still is joking around, actually, when she's up for it. But even so, there have been more visits to the hospital lately than I'd like (which is really 0, so any visit to the hospital is unwelcome in my eyes)...so, my point is, just in case I'm absent for days, or even a few weeks at a time, know that it's because once again something unexpected has come up.

But, in the meantime, I'm working as hard as I can to get things listed in my shops. Trying to squeeze in picture-taking, editing, describing, measuring and listing items is no quick feat. I had planned to have Christmas ornaments up by now, but I'm still uploading loads to Other Such Nonsense 2: Vintage and Supply. It was a busy thrift season this summer and I have far, far too much, as I've said before, so I'm sharing the nifty thrifty finds. Here are some recently added items...

Here's some pictures I've yet to share on my final estate sale stop of the season. I doubt there will be many more before spring. Maine in the winter equals not a lot of thrifting, unfortunately. But, I did score some awesome finds at this sale! The 1950s plastic dollhouse babies are my favorites, along with the tin globe bank, which was a steal at 50 cents!

In other news, last week, Tim's sister got married. Here's a photo of me and Tim and his nephew, Trot, who just recently turned 1 year old!Trot was sooo cute in his little tuxedo! This kid has such a fun little personality too...he's totally stolen my heart!

I can't believe all the leaves here have started changing already. Is it really fall? Yikes! I have been enjoying lots of pumpkin-flavored goodies, though, so that's exciting. I was over the moon the other day when I found out I could get a pumpkin spice iced coffee at Dunkin' Donuts! I've also been enjoying the start of the fall television season. It's good to be able to watch "The Office" on Thursday nights again! And my new favorites are "Glee" and "the Vampire Diaries". Any one have any new favorites?

Hello all! It's very much beginning to feel like fall, isn't it? All the new tv seasons have started. I remember back in May, thinking it would feel like forever before they would start again and then poof! They're back!

I've added some brand new super fun Christmas cards to the Other Such Nonsense Etsy and Lollishop! I know, it seems early, but really, I'm sure Christmas will be here before we know it. The retail stores are already bringing out their Christmas goods and I've got lots of my own Christmas goodies that I've prepared for this holiday season, in addition to the cards. New 2009 button wreath ornaments, pretty beaded snowflake ornaments, wall hangings, etc. I'll be adding these lovelies soon.

A Rainy Saturday.

So much for having our yard sale today. Thanks to the rain, we've had to postpone till next week. I really hope it's nice next Saturday! I really have so much stuff I want to try to get rid of.

Speaking of yard sales, I had posted an ad for it on Craigslist. It was my first time posting on there ever. Has anyone ever done this? I had 2 people respond asking if I need money. I know this is probably an attempt at a scam, but I just couldn't believe that people finds these adds and try this. I mean, seriously. What the heck?

And along the lines of having so much stuff, I just can't help but keep bringing in more! haha Last week, I went to an estate sale with my Grandmother. It was crazy!I guess this was like my first "real" estate sale...others have been the family trying to sell stuff in boxes and bags out in a driveway. This one was run by what I'm assuming was a company. It was an older estate, probably vacant for years. I don't believe I saw anything past the 1980s, so the people had been gone for awhile. Like I said, it was crazy though...there were probably 40-50 people mobbed around waiting to get in when it opened. Once it did, everyone just ran and grabbed! I thought my poor Grandmother was going to get trampled or something! The prices on some things were a bit high, particularly furniture, but I wasn't looking for furniture, just small things.My favorite find was 2 vintage Jadite sugar bowls that were hidden at the very back of a cabinet. It was so dark inside, so I couldn't really see. I didn't even realize these were Jadite at first...I saw a blue-ish/green-ish color that looked appealing, so I just grabbed them. It wasn't until I got home and was able to actually look at them that I realized what they were. I was so excited! I've fallen in love with Jadite over the past few months from seeing pieces on Etsy and in antique malls, but they're always sooo expensive. I've been itching to find some! These were $1 each. Score!
And I also really love this little ceramic deer. He's losing his paint in spots, but otherwise, he's in great condition. He was found at the very bottom of a box. Poor thing.Off to go do some food shopping. Always fun stuff. Especially when it means picking up a coffee from Dunkin' Donuts on the way home!

Vintage and Supply Etsy Update

Like these vintage children's birthday activity cards...And the most awesome vintage plastic Santa cupcakes picks in their original packaging by the Lone Toy Tree Company...Then, there's this slightly creepy but way cool vintage Santa doll head pick!
How fun would he be stuck on top of someone's Christmas stocking? haha

And this sweet and simple 1940s My Verses booklet, handmade by a child...Some other stuff too, so be sure to check it out! I've got lots on the way, like vintage housewares, more lace, buttons, etc. I just have to photograph and sort everything, which has proven to be quite a pain in the you know what.

Right now, all I have is a basic point and shoot digital camera and I've been feeling quite frustrated with how the camera picks up light (or rather doesn't), which means that sometimes my photos come out a little fuzzy. It drives me nuts! I'm such a perfectionist. If you've noticed, I've also been playing with some new backgrounds and props too. Still trying to find the perfect combination. I may have today. We shall see. Of course, once I do, I'll have to re-image everything. Fun stuff!

In the next few weeks, I will be starting to add new Christmas ornaments for the 2009 season, as well as some other lovelies at both the Other Such Nonsense Etsy shop and Lollishop. So, be on the lookout for those! Of course, I'll probably share some sneak peeks soon! In other news, it's going to be a busy week for me. Tim and I have decided to have a yard sale this coming week and I've spent tons of time sorting through everything, trying to get prepared. The Rest.

Alright, here's the rest of all my thrifted finds that I have yet to show. These all came from this past weekend, mostly from 2 separate estate sales.

Some of my favorite finds to date are in these hauls!

Here's my haul from an estate and yard sale from this past Saturday.All the vintage laces, trims, bias tape, seam binding and ornaments were from one estate sale. This was the first estate sale that I have been to where you actually go through the house. It was a bit strange at first, but then when I saw the table of laces and trims, I was in heaven! There was tons of yarn and some other random things too, but I didn't have any arms left to go through any of it or pick up any of it, unfortunately. Plus, I wasn't sure how the price was going to be. To my surprise it was extremely fair and now I'm a bit, "Oh, I wish I had gotten more!".I absolutely adore the vintage sequin trim!I also picked up a pink Pyrex Gooseberry casserole dish with this lot, although it's not pictured. It came with a cover, but after getting home, I noticed it's not the right cover for the dish. Bah!

The ephemera-type stuff was all in a box and picked up from a yard sale. I fell in love with this old Babycham coaster. The baby deer graphic and colors...sigh! So pretty. I think I may put it up on an inspiration board.
On Sunday, I hit up another estate sale and at this one, everything was just thrown in boxes and bags and they were all strewn about the driveway. I, as carefully as I could, loaded up a huge grocery tote filled with stuff. And I mean, it was really filled. I had so many breakables in there too, I was terrified I was going to break something.Everything was caked in dirt, but overall, it all cleaned up very nicely!
My favorite find of the weekend was this vintage Cathrine Holm Lotus Enamelware Pot. It was in the first box I look at and I picked it up at the time (I didn't know what it was) because I adored the colors and pattern. I was very excited when I got it home and actually realized what it was. And I was more excited that it cleaned up beautifully (almost like new!)...I was also very excited about this vintage wooden perpetual calendar. It's marked Japan and is in great condition, with the exception of one missing orange ball on the number stick.

I picked up tons of Christmas stuff too...they had SO many bags! I tried to only grab the stuff that really stood out to me.So many kitschy, lovely things!
And I especially adore this vintage plastic expandable nativity...how cool, huh? If anyone knows who made this, I'd love to find out!

So, overall, a pretty good weekend for thrifting.

This morning, Tim made pancakes for us (so delicious! I love when he makes them!) and this afternoon, I babysat his nephew (too cute!). This evening, I finished cleaning some vintage buttons that I've had sitting around on the kitchen table forever and tomorrow, hopefully I'll tackle more boxes in the basement. At some point, I also need to get back into my crafty closet and make something! haha

Catching Up.

I'm on vacation still and spending the night editing and archiving months worth of photos. Last night I spent downstairs in the basement sorting through boxes and boxes of stuff...childhood books, toys, mementos, old Beanie Babies (yes, I collected them and still have them), things I'm saving for if I ever have my own house (i.e. Pyrex!), etc. I'm also trying to purge, with the hopes of having a yard sale next spring. It's still not done and I'm in the process of trying to finish multiple other projects as well. For some reason, I've REALLY gotten behind in the past year since the move. Ugh!

So, I'm catching up...or trying to. And to go along with that, I haven't posted any photos of my lovely thrifty finds for the past few weeks. This post is going to be dedicated to that, of course!

First up, my yard sale finds from 7.18:
I really adore the vintage Madeline book. The colors and pictures are so inspiring to me. I've had a major crush on vintage children's books lately. I look for them everywhere and pick up the ones I find extra inspiring!I was really excited to find the Urban Outfitters sequined frame at a church rummage sale! It was just $1.00 too! I have one in silver sequins that I bought brand new from the store a year or so ago for $16.00, I believe. I couldn't pass the black one up!The vintage plastic miniatures were found at the last sale of the day, one that I almost didn't go to. Glad I did!

And here are my yard sale finds from 7.31:Lots of lace and trims!The cupcake toppers were free!
The vintage Alice in Wonderland book and Gus (from "Cinderella"...GusGus!) ornament are my favorite finds from the day and came from the same yard sale, which was an unexpected stop and was right across the street from my Grandmother's house. The book was 50 cents and Gus was 5 cents.

And this stuff was from the local antiques flea market (one of my favorite places!)...the seam binding was 25 cents a piece. And the plastic deer has become one of my favorites...I've named him Chester and you may be seeing him around Other Such Nonsense and Other Such Nonsense 2: Vintage and Supply!I also managed to score this large lot of vintage lace from a very kind lady. There was so much of it! I'm still sorting through it! Expect to see some make it's way into Other Such Nonsense 2!That's all for now. Back to archiving. I still have to share this past weekend's finds with you (tomorrow, hopefully!) and they're some of my favorites! For me, this has been a wonderful thrift season so far!

Buttons!

As I've mentioned in previous entries, I've got a major crush on vintage buttons. Colorful, fancy, fun, whimsical vintage buttons. I can never seem to get enough! I've picked up a lot of buttons over the summer so far. I can't pass by a jar or tin at the flea market without looking through and becoming so tempted to buy them!

And as I've also mentioned, I've spent LOTS of time cleaning them, because, for some reason, they're never clean. I swear people used to store their buttons in garages and dingy cellars.

I thought I'd show you some of my current favorites from my collection...
Is it wrong that I just get SO excited and giddy from looking at these? Probably!

And here are 2 vintage Canada (probably uniform) metal buttons. These were a fun surprise to find!

Cleaning buttons and ironing fabric.

This is what my life has turned into.I've been cleaning vintage buttons for the past month now. I found tons and tons over my birthday weekend towards the end of June and since, I've found a bit more at the flea market that I couldn't pass up. It's a problem...my love for vintage buttons. I recognize it. And I'm working on it. Really, I am! haha

On top of that, I picked up a huge bedding/comforter bag of vintage fabric and quilt scraps from a yard sale last weekend. All of the pieces were all crinkly and wrinkly, so I decided to iron them. I was ironing for 2 days. And as if that wasn't enough, after I was finished with those, I had the brilliant idea to to iron the rest of my fabric stash. You know, because the iron and ironing board were already out. Umm...yeah. I was ironing for awhile.

I took a few photos around the bedroom today. This was after it was freshly dusted and cleaned. Fun stuff.And I added a new Heartfelt Wall Hanging to Other Such Nonsense.Coming REALLY soon to the ol' shop are these new Tiny House Standees! So excited about these! So fun to make them! Collect a bunch and make a little village! LOVED IT! What did you all think? I thought it was super cute and really enjoyed the interaction between Hermione and Harry in this one.

Layout Show and Tell

I feel like I never scrapbook any more. Lately, I've really had the urge to though and have managed to get out a few pages in the past few weeks. Here they are...
It felt so good to complete a few layouts! Makes me wonder why I don't scrapbook more often as of late. Although, it's funny, when I sit down to scrapbook after I haven't in a while, it almost feels like I've forgotten how and that I have to find my way around the page again.

This has me excited and thinking about "Alice in Wonderland" a lot lately. I think lots of other feel the same right now.Will it ever stop raining here in New England? It's rained or been cloudy and overcast nearly every day since the beginning of June. It has to stop sometime, right? Hopefully by this weekend, especially since I hope to go to the outdoor flea market. So, here's hoping!

Recent thrifty finds.

I know...I haven't posted anything in a bit. Horrible, horrible. Last weekend was my birthday. That was fun. 24 years old now. Where does the time go? This birthday was sooo much better than my last birthday...no stress. That's the way birthdays should be!

And I spent lots of time thrifting...eeee! Love! I found lots of neat little things...vintage trims, greeting cards, Snoopy figures, kitsch, etc. Here's a look...This little boy on a tin bicycle is so fun! I love his face. Unfortunately, he's missing his handlebars. Poor guy. Trying to think of something to use to make my own handlebars for him.

And this girl is super creepy in the best sort of way! Made in Japan. Her eyes are clouded with dirt and dust and unfortunately, I believe it's all on the inside because it won't wipe off. Anyone know how to fix this? I mean, I could leave her all creepy-like. But I think she'd be so cute fixed up. If anyone knows, please leave a comment on this post...thanks!

And yesterday I hit up an indoor flea market and an antiques mall with my friend, Katie...found some cool things. Not too much...some crepe paper, buckles, lace eyelet trim, a tiny flocked pink apple and pear, and this wonderful vintage Hasbro toy Sew-Rite sewing machine!I adore the sewing machine! It's so pink and so cute! If I ever take my sewing machine out of it's box and learn to sew and set-up a designated area for said activity, this is totally being displayed in that area!

I also managed to get my hands on a TON of buttons. Here we are about a week later, and I'm still sorting and cleaning. I plan on adding some to my Etsy vintage and supply shop at some point (and also, if the sun ever comes out again to take pictures)...

I have done a bit of scrapbooking. Woah. I know! haha I'll post the layouts I've finished sometime this week, so stay tuned!

Ben & Jerry's is the devil.

I'm sure you can agree. Now that it's somewhat warmer out, I've found myself constantly reaching for a pint of either Ben & Jerry's Cheesecake Brownie or my new favorite, Dublin Mudslide, every time I'm in the frozen aisle of my local supermarket. What is this??? I mean, I've always enjoyed ice cream, but have had the will power to avoid it a majority of the time. This year, nope. No will power whatsoever. No will power to say no to Ben and no to Jerry and no to their yummy, yummy creamy frozen goodness! Grr! And I can already feel the effects of eating it. You really cannot have your cake (or in this case, ice cream) and eat it too. So unfortunate.

I've also managed to take up a really BAD iced coffee addiction too. I've always been addicted, but now it's way worse. Like every day, sometimes 3 times a day with extra cream each time. ARGHHH! Someone help me! Please!

But not this week. Next week, for sure. See, this Saturday is my birthday. 24 years old. And, I must celebrate with iced coffee and ice cream cake and....thrifting...yes, thrifting sounds nice. That's all I have planned. That's it and the rain that they're forecasting had better hold off!

Speaking of thrifting, I haven't showed you all what I picked up after hitting a few yard sales with my Grandmother (she loves yard sales, always have...I suppose that's where I get the love of vintage and stuff from) on Saturday.Obviously, it was quite successful and while most is pictured, not all of it is. Not pictured is a large lot of vintage lace I managed to find. A whole box...for just $1.00! At the time of the photos, I hadn't really sorted through it yet.

Some things will be showing up in my Etsy shop, Other Such Nonsense 2: Vintage and Supply. I really have too much stuff as it is and while I'd like to keep it all, I just don't have the space. I'll add things now and then to the shop....supplies, vintage odds and ends. It really will have a wide range of random goods and you never know what might pop up there. Especially since when I'm out and see something cute or neat, I just can't bear to leave it there. Then, I get it all home and I go, oh my goodness...what am I going to do with all this!?

Sunday's flea market finds.

Expect lots of these type of posts this summer, because believe me, as long as the weather is nice and the vendors are there, I'll be trying to hit up my local antiques flea market as much as possible!

Here's what I picked up yesterday...

Lots of lovely vintage seam binding and bias tape!The most gorgeous vintage buttons EVER! The green, the design....oh my!Antique Victorian scrap, removed from actual Victorian scrapbooks. The back of one scrap read 1883.A whole sewing basket filled with thread, lace, etc.
I did pick up a few other things, but I didn't manage to get pictures of those before the sun went away. I'll have to try to remember to get some.

Tim and I spent the afternoon with this little guy...his adorable little nephew! Soooo cute! I just adore him!
My pillow is now calling to me...of course, I must answer.

A very thrifty weekend.

That, it was! Saturday morning was spent yard sale-ing and Sunday morning was spent at the local antiques flea market, resulting in some lovely finds overall! So exciting!

Would you like to see what I picked up?

Here's my yard sale finds...
A large framed owl embroidery piece from Mission Gallery in El Torro, a lovely cross-stitched tissue box cover with pink roses, a set of Pyrex Town and Country (I believe) casserole dishes - 2 with the glass lids, a small jar of buttons, a vintage acrylic Christmas ornament, a small milk glass vase, a large basket (that now holds my ribbon stash), a vintage twin floral flat sheet and some other random things.

Here's a closer look at the owl embroidery...On to the flea market finds! I found the best seller who had some vintage sewing notions and was selling them VERY cheap! From her, I purchased some seam binding, embroidered ribbon with a child-like print new in it's package, sequin appliques, rhinestone chains, 2 packets of rhinestones, and a few vintage Christmas cards, etc. Here's a peek!I also picked up a vintage handkerchief with the loveliest pink and green rose print...so inspiring! Not sure what I'll do with this yet.And here's a 1946 "The Four Musicians of Bremen" book with some of the seam binding mentioned above.I loved the cover art and the yellow and had to pick it up because my Father and I used to read this together when I was little. I still have that version, but it's a much more modern one.

I also picked up an old jar of buttons (because you never know what you'll find in there!) and was pleased when I found lots of lovely buttons, some rhinestone, hidden amongst the others and lots of dirt. A majority of my evening was spent cleaning these buttons last night, but I think it paid off...look at how lovely these all are...Here's a look at some of the dirty buttons before cleaning...I also managed to reorganize my lace. I keep it in a basket and try to keep the blues and greens to one side and the reds and pinks to the other....it often gets very messy, but is so fulfilling when you re-organize and then it looks like this, at least for a little while!Off to get ready for work...I'll leave you with a photo of some folded blankets and throws, just because I thought it looked fun.Hope everyone had a wonderful weekend!
